The 2013 Sydney to Hobart was one of the most exciting to watch in years, with KZ Race Furlers and KZ Bowmen on the top 6 boats. Wild Oats successfully took line honors again, with Anthony Bell’s Loyal in second. Third place went to Syd Fishers Ragamuffin. Black Jack, Beau Geste and Giacomo rounding out the top 6, with some very close finishes between them.  Reports off all the boats were that KZ Race Furlers preformed to perfection.

50 years of class is not something to be scoffed at, especially a class which is sailed more often than not with siblings, parents, or spouse combinations. It can be built in the backyard, garage or living room as many of these have, and are still going strong with 69 boats racing at nationals.

This year we worked with KZ Bowman Scott Beavis on refining systems (BOAT  NAME). Scott moved off the bow of maxi Wild Oats to the helm of a Sunburst with 6 year old son Jack.  We also had some enquires post regatta from another team looking to change up systems as well. Congratulations to Andrew and Cameron Brown, Lincoln and Ben Fraser and Penny and Brett Linton.

“Wow” – is the first word that comes to mind when we hear what this 22 year old has achieved in the past few months. New rules, new controversy.  The 2013-2016 edition of The Racing Rules of Sailing is in full use worldwide and there have been some teething issues with rule 55 (trash disposal).  It states: “A competitor shall not intentionally put trash in the water.” This has been clarified by ISAF, and from now on you are breaking Rule 55 by “wooling” or rubber banding your kites for that racing hoist. Regardless if it is a biodegradable product or not, broken rubber bands or wool which is discharged into the water, will be deemed to trash and...

Think for a moment about all those pictures of Volvo Ocean racers with tonnes of water bursting over the bow and sweeping down the deck. Then consider that in fast reaching conditions the first item of gear to experience that destructive force for hour after hour, day after day is the A-sail furling drum.

To get there you go quickly past the “dreamland” of helmsmen and navigators, through the trimmers and pit of “adventureland” and there in the distance, you will find “frontierland”, home to the legendary bowman in furler world. Furler world is a harsh place, only the best survive up here. Pounded by tons of water, pushed and pulled to the limit, it is not a place for the underspecced and/or unproven...
